Where is the Albert Bridge?

The Albert Bridge is located on Albert Bridge Road between the Battersea and Chelsea Districts of London, connecting the two communities. This bridge is a busy thoroughfare for commuters in both directions, with over 20,000 crossings per day. Walking over the Albert Bridge should be on your list of things to see in London England. During the day or evening, this is one of London’s most beautiful bridges that light up! It’s unique design and beauty can be photographed or viewed from many locations around the bridge and from across the river. If you’re able, walk over just before or after dusk, to view the bridge both before and after it lights up.

While visiting London, we crossed this bridge quite often. We used it on our way to or from Battersea Park and Battersea Power Station from Pimlico. Although a further loop than taking the Chelsea Bridge, it’s worth the walk if you have the time.

Why is it named the Albert Bridge?

This bridge was named after Prince Albert upon opening in 1873.

What type of Bridge is it? What’s it used for?

The Albert Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed suspension bridge, installed in 1873.

Commuters travelling to and from work use this bridge daily. It is therefore important for connecting communities. It’s a popular landmark, and tourists come to see the light pastel colour scheme, and the bridge illuminated at night (using 4000 LED lights), intended to make the bridge more visible.

What’s the history of the bridge?

It is now maintained by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

In 1858 the original bridge opened as a toll bridge. Metropolitan Board of Works took it over in 1879 and it was freed of it’s tolls. The existing bridge, erected in 1937 is the second of two bridges on this site.

What river does the Albert Bridge go over?

This bridge traverses the River Thames and is one of several bridges that do so.

How long and wide is the bridge?

This bridge is 710 feet (220 m) long and 41 feet (12 m) wide.

Can you walk and cycle across the Albert Bridge?

This bridge is a multiuse structure which allows for traffic, pedestrian and cyclist crossing. In fact, many changes made over the years ensure this bridge continues to operate well for all concerned.

Where are the best places to view the bridge?

On either side of the river, you will get a great view of the bridge. From Battersea Park on the south bank of the River Thames, you will see some stunning views at all times of the day and evening. One of our favourite views of the Albert Bridge is from the top of Lift 109 at the Battersea Power Station.

Is it worth viewing the Albert Bridge?

Of course, this bridge is worth viewing and should therefore be included on your list of things to see in London, UK while visiting.

The Albert Bridge is a popular spot for tourists to take selfies and photos of, especially at night.

The bridge lights up at night giving it a very different look than during the day. Indeed, day or evening, it’s worth checking out!

Where is there to stay within walking distance to the Albert Bridge?

There are many hotels close to the bridge on both sides of the river. Some hotels, , depending on the room you choose, if you’re fortunate, may even have a view of the bridge.

Both Chelsea and Battersea are very walkable area of London UK. Regardless of which hotel you choose, amenities will be fairly close by.

If possible, stay a few days in this area of the city. Likely, you will walk over this bridge more than once. There are many things to see in this area, and it’s an active and charming place to visit!
