Butchart Gardens Victoria BC-Autumn

We’ve visited the Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC in the autumn or fall many times. It’s one of Gail’s favourite things to do for her birthday in October. Some years, it’s easy to see the blossoms are fading, but in other years, like 2022, much of the gardens are still in bloom. Autumn at the Butchart Gardens Victoria BC and nearby is lovely; still green and relatively warm. Choosing fall as a time of year to visit is certainly a fun activity for the whole family while in Victoria, BC!

Butchart Gardens is in Brentwood Bay, which is a journey from Victoria downtown. It’s worth staying close to or in downtown Victoria and making a day trip to enjoy the Gardens during your visit.

The location of this hotel is across the Johnson Street Bridge from downtown. If you like a daily walk along the water, this hotel will delight you. Slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core this will offer you a more relaxed stay, and you will easily feel pampered by the staff here.

How to I get from downtown Victoria to the Gardens?

BC transit in Victoria is easy to take and very affordable. It will take you a little longer by bus to get to the Butchart Gardens, however the service from downtown to the Butchart Gardens is quite convenient. A day pass is $5.00. This will get you to the Butchart Gardens, then back downtown again when your ready. Children under 12 ride for free.

If you choose, you may also decide to rent a car for your visit to Victoria. We would recommend doing so at the airport for convenience.

What is Butchart Gardens like in the Autumn?

The weather on our latest visit in October, 2022 was quite warm. We have visited the Butchart Gardens on many occasions and enjoy walking the paths leading through the garden at any time of the year. As we visit Butchart Gardens fairly often, we can usually walk through in approximately 1.5 hours at a fairly leisurely pace, however we know where we’re going.

If it’s your first visit to the Gardens, plan at least 3-4 hours to make sure you see everything and take as many pictures as you want.

One of the biggest clues that it’s autumn at the Butchart Gardens is the lovely display of pumpkins. It’s usually located close to the Carousel / Merry Go Round, and it’s a very popular spot for selfies.

Don’t forget to check out the Japanese Garden! The entrance is unmistakable. You will enjoy the small bridges and winding paths in this section. Note: there are some stairs to maneuver in this area. It’s well worth a visit if you’re able to manage stairs.

As you pass the market, you will see the Butchart Boar. We usually give his nose a rub as we walk by for luck, as visitors have been doing for generations. You’ll see his nose has been varnished as a result of this affection.

You will undoubtedly find your trip to the Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC in the fall to be relaxing and enjoyable. A bucket list item for some folks, Butchart Gardens’ international acclaim is undeniable, and certainly warranted.
